I’ve always been fascinated by this as I’ve never fully understood how book covers come to be. Do publishers commission artists to come up with something? Do they tell them what to draw? Do the artists get an advance copy of the book and just some up with something on their own that they think embodies the heart of the novel? Do authors get any input whatsoever?
I was watching a Stephen King interview where he was talking about Bag of Bones, and that the cabin on the cover was a lot smaller than what he envisioned it to be in the story, suggesting that he pretty much had no creative input on the cover.
Does anyone have any insight into this process?
