I love books about people in messed up corporate environments. I like hearing about leaders making decisions that make no sense, people navigating the contrast between their personal values and the values of their organization, dealing with general incompetence, etc. And the books should be well written/a good story overall.
Genre: I’m mainly seeking recommendations for nonfiction and memoir, though I’ll consider fiction if you make a good argument for it (e.g. it’s closely based on the author’s real life experiences)
Setting: I’m mostly interested in fairly recent books about US corporate culture, but again, if you can make a strong argument for a more classic book, I’m open to hearing it.
Recent books I’ve read that fall into this category somewhat:
*Going Infinite* by Michael Lewis: About the collapse of FTX. Loved this other than the weird ending where the author argues that SBF is innocent. The level of bizarre incompetence on display – please inject it directly into my veins. Lewis’s closeness to the subject also made it better overall, even though (as I said) it eventually led him to making some bizarre conclusions.
*Exit Interview: The Life and Death of My Ambitious Career* by Kristi Coulter: A memoir about the author’s time working at Amazon. I’m only about a third of the way though and I’m really enjoying it. She writes so well about the shocking minutae of daily life in a huge company where nobody has enough information or resources to do their job properly.
*Uncanny Valley* by Anna Wiener: I read this a few years ago and liked it just fine, though I don’t remember it super well. Adding it because I’m sure it would get recommended otherwise.
*The Man Who Broke Capitalism: How Jack Welch Gutted the Heartland and Crushed the Soul of Corporate America—and How to Undo His Legacy* by David Gelles: Not exactly what I’m looking for here since it’s not about the author’s personal experience in a company, but I wanted to include it because I feel like the author did such a good job exploring why exactly GE’s corporate culture broke down so badly.
*Bartleby the Scrivener* by Herman Melville: Again, not exactly what I’m looking for today but it’s tangentially related and I loved it so much.
