I love 1984. It’s one of the most politically informative pieces of fiction ever made. Orwell wrote what he imagined the most extreme form of authoritarianism would look like, and it’s a brilliant result. However, 75 years after he published the novel, massive events have shaped a different world than he imagined. As a 24 year old man, much of my political upbringing has revolved around economic difficulty, severe inequality, and the rise of Trump and the ideology that has amassed from his movement. Much of what Orwell cautioned about can be found in Trump and his party, but it doesn’t account for everything we see in his movement. I was wondering what books are similar to 1984 but also take into account our modern world and all the historic, political, economic and technological developments that have occurred since Orwells final book was published?

It’s not similar to 1984 but Chuck Wendig’s *Wanderers* basically predicted everything about Covid and MAGA behavior.

    2. The absolute best speculative/dystopian version of the US based on the current state of things is Margaret Atwood’s Maddaddam trilogy. Oryx and Crake is the first book. It is scary how easily you can see our world turning into the world she describes, both before and after the pandemic-related apocalypse she describes.

Oryx and crake by Margaret Atwood. Was written in the early 2000s after seeing a lot of deregulation and privatization in the Reagan and W Bush administrations. It also deals with the rise of the internet and dark web.
