When I was younger I really loved fantasy books but eventually grew out of it. I am trying to get back into reading now, but i find fantasy books (mortal instruments, throne of glass, etc) kind of childish or too predictable. But I miss the adventure / magical component that comes with this genre.
I want to read something that is set in a realistic world but has an element of fantasy – the only example I can think of right now is the anime ‘death note’ as its set in a real world but the notebook adds just enough of the fantasy element. sorry if this is too confusing😅
plz lmk if you have any suggestions!

The books you mention reading are ya fantasy. If you tried adult fantasy you might not find them childish and predictable.
As for books in a realistic world with some fantasy elements:
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is regency England with magic
Her Majesty’s Dragon is napoleonic wars with dragons
The Golem and the Djinni is about immigrants in turn of the century New York but they’re a golem and a djinni
