Looking for suggestions on children’s novels to read aloud to my 5.5 year old nanny kid. I was looking into reading him Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland next but he’s a very sensitive child and I wonder if it would be too scary for him. We just finished reading the Little House series which he loved and is asking to re-read. We tried Magic Tree House in the summer which he mostly liked but was not a fan of how Jack and Annie are in presumed danger every book.
I was thinking possibly Charlotte’s Web, Matilda, or Mary Poppins but any other suggestions are welcome 🙂

I read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to my kid when he was 5, and he liked it. I’m reading The Hobbit to him now, and he seems to be into it so far.
When I was five my parents read me the first Narnia book The magician’s nephew and I really enjoyed it
Anne of Green Gables
The Incredible Journey (it’s what Homeward Bound was based on IIRC)
Dragons at the Crumbling Castle (Terry Pratchett has lots of fun kids books)
The Golden Compass
Wayside School Books
