I’m thinking something a little like Douglas Preston and/or Lincoln Child in terms of being genre-defying. I generally read fantasy and love Neil Gaiman, Holly Black, Charles DeLint, and Garth Nix. My favorite classics are Sherlock Holmes and Edgar Allan Poe. I love character driven stories. Diversity gets extra points. Romance is my big “no thank you”. A very tiny amount of generic romance is ok, but nothing where it plays a major part in the plot or for the characters. Can be stand-alone or series.
