This part of American history (after civil war to beginning of WW2) seems really interesting, I just don’t know enough about it. But if you have other books that fit the prompt feel free to suggest them.
More interested in Midwest/Northeast/Appalachia and less interested in reconstruction or the South (or the West). But if a book on these regions or topics is really good I don’t mind it being suggested.
No specific topic or genre needed.
Edit: Not WWI

Ron Rash writes a lot about Appalachian mountains area. Although maybe a little later than your request, I highly recommend One Foot in Eden and Serena for a gritty well written story set in this region.
For nonfiction, you might try Rachel Maddow’s “Ultra,” which is about the rise of the fascist movement in the U.S. during the 1920s and 30s.
For fiction, you might try Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy–a well-researched epic novel about young man who joins a gruesomely-violent gang in Texas in the late 1840s and 50s. It’s considered one of the great novels of the 20th century, but the violence is a lot.
