With the new Dune movie out, I’m hyperfixating like I’m sure everyone else is. But I’ve already read Dune and the 5 sequels 3 times so I’m looking for something else to scratch the itch next. I feel like the Left Hand of Darkness is the only other book I’ve read that I find similar in its power and innovation. (of course there are a lot of incredible fantasy novels out there too and many of them I love for different reasons)
What are some other profound sci fi or fantasy novels I should read? Something pretty light on the sci fi or fantasy elements themselves – more political intrigue in a world that poses some hard questions, an interesting and maybe critical message, morally gray characters or unreliable narrators, lots of introspection, and some really beautiful prose. I like the ones that don’t condescend too much with excessive exposition or explanation of science. I also really like a melancholy tone without a happy ending.
Thanks for enlightening me!!
