When I was a kid (with undiagnosed ADHD and Bipolar, so had a tough time), I used to bury myself in books. Sometimes read some of the better ones multiple times. TBH I’d get surly when I had to set them aside for dinner, school, or once, memorably, when my grandmother locked me out of the house to get some fresh air.
As I grew, my life got more enriched, and I got therapy and I generally don’t go full escape-mode anymore. But this last year has been rough for a few reasons, and when I have a whole day to myself I get very much into my own head. So I’ve started bringing the old favorites back out.
I wonder, though, what’s new since the 80s and 90s? Lots, I know, but for this specific need, are there some good options out there?
Books that let me while away whole days included:
* **Lord of the Rings**
* **Chronicles of Amber**
* **I, Robot** series
* **Four Lords of the Diamond** (Jack Chalker)
* **A Wrinkle in Time** series
* **Talisman** by King and Straub
* **Dark Tower** series by King
* **Hitchhiker’s Guide** series
and some others. Based on this list, does anyone have a recommendation for a big book or tight series for pure escapism? (and Harry Potter used to be on the list, but is no longer for Reasons)
I am a fan of horror and dark stories, but sometimes they suck me in TOO far lol. **IT** was a tough one, because I was the age of the kids and lived in a small town and was pretty depressed when I read it.
