Hi, long time lurker here, posting for the first time. A little something about me – I’m in no way an avid reader. I pick up 4-5 books in a year but I tend to be absolutely consumed by them up when I sit with one. Last year somehow I ended up stumbling on “A Little Life” without knowing any spoilers and trigger warnigs, and i finished the whole book in 5 days (I usually take a week to finish even 300 page novels). That was August and since then, I’ve been in this slump where I have been unable to even tolerate any book I’ve picked up or been recommended. I DO NOT WANT TO READ SOMETHING SO HOPELESSLY TRAUMATISING AGAIN, but every book I start seem either very, I don’t know how to say it, basic or simple when it comes to the story or the writing just feels very unengaging and immature compared to my last read.
In short, maybe I’d like something that does punch me in the gut but leave with a hug in the end (and not bleeding on the streets like ‘The Little Life’ did). Idk how much sense I made but maybe help me out in finding something?
(Sorry for the long post🙈)

Crime & Punishment
Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt
The young MC in [Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/139400713) is curious about his family and death, embarking on his journey through those lenses. The search has its struggles and challenges, and he has many questions along the way. The prose is well written, sprinkled with poetry between chapters (the MC himself being a poet).
Surprisingly, the ending felt more upbeat than one would think of a premise like this.
