Please recommend me some books to stock a mini classroom library for children age 7-9!
I’m looking for books which will inspire a range of children to independently read for pleasure – so a variety of genres would be ideal.
The children have varied levels of reading confidence so a combination of some “easy” and some “challenging” reads would be great.
Bonus for:
– Books published in the last 10 years
– Diverse characters
– Story settings with mountains or rivers

My favorite book when I was 7 was Rasmus and the vagabond by Lindgren. By her I also love Brothers Lionheart, Ronja, Pippi.
In the last few years and diverse characters I really love the Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend, it’s just brilliant
Frog and Toad is older, but such a sweet story for kids that age, especially for kids who may be struggling to read.
The Tale of Despereaux is a fun adventure, but more challenging
The Magic Tree House series is always popular and there are so many topics to choose from

My 11yo kid recommends the following “female empowering” books for ages 7-9:
“Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls”
Max and the Midnights
Any Tamora Pierce books (fantasy)
Enchanted Forest Chronicles (silly and fun, challenges fairytale tropes)
Hamster Princess series
Cressida Cowell: How to Train your Dragon etc.
Eoin Colfer: Artemis Fowl
Dav Pilkey: Captain Underpants…
Arthur Ransome: Swallows and Amazons (Lake and river)
Elinor M Brent-Dyer: the School at the Chalet (Mountain)
Jeremy Strong: the One Hundred Mile an Hour Dog
SF Said: Varjak Paw
*Kneeknock Rise* by Natalie Babbitt is an old book, but it takes place at the foot of a mountain that holds a mystery. It would probably be a challenging read for this age range.
I strongly second the Nevermoor rec! Here are a few others I’d recommend:
