I think particularly of The Flashman Papers, Gone Girl, and Lolita. Why is each of these so excellent, aside from just being excellently-written? I think it’s because we watch their central conflicts develop even before they’ve affected anyone, and anticipate the consequences, so no suspense need be otherwise contrived. And we don’t need to wait until the villain’s exposition is spoken aloud in order to more-or-less understand their motivations, since it’s the whole damn book to begin with.
Nearby things like the narrating assistant to the villain etc., or the villain’s perspective in third-person-limited can go here, just please tell me a little bit about it and what you like about it.
