I just finished **The Victorian City: Everyday Life in Dickens’ London**, by Judith Flanders. I absolutely loved learning about aspects of everyday life, from food and disease to the impact of railroads. Flanders is a fantastic writer; her storytelling conveys large, abstract systems as well as the most important parts of life for regular people. By the end, I felt like I could imagine what it would have been like to walk down the street.

I’m looking for more books that deal with life in a specific city during a specific time period. Preferably before 1920, and bonus points if it’s outside western Europe. Any favorites? Thanks!!
