I’m part of a book club with 7 ladies, all of us 30 years old, and we’re all taking turns suggesting a book to read for the month. My turn is coming up soon 🙂
Some context: I studied English lit in university and I am an avid reader. However, my friends in this book club are not avid readers at all. I am so excited that they all decided they want to get back into reading this year!! I’m hoping to maintain their momentum, and hopefully expose them to some really great classics that won’t scare them away.
Their interests lie mostly in contemporary fiction, so I wanted to suggest something that’s not too heavy, but still quite meaningful. I think modern classics would be more up their alley, compared to the older established favourites like Anna Karenina, Wuthering Heights, Great Expectations, etc. Anything published after the year 1950 would probably be best. Science fiction, fantasy, regular fiction, nonfiction — anything is on the table, as long as it’s relatively accessible (in terms of language and meaning).
Does anyone have any modern classic suggestions to help non-readers rediscover the love of reading?
