I’m looking for a good psychological thriller WITHOUT any of these tropes (I think they’re all overdone)
-Main character is hiding something major (like they were actually the killer but told the story all along as if they weren’t)
-Husband starts out great and turns out to be overly abusive and the wife creates an elaborate plot to escape the marriage
-Someone changes their identity and becomes close to someone from their past
-A person dies/is killed accidentally and main character(s) cover it up and become involved in more crime (I guess this goes with the first point)
-Main character is obsessed with trying to solve something but in the end they either were involved or already knew what happened

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
The MC, only 17y old boy, intentionally kills someone (doesnt hide it, he says he is gonna kill them)….because he thinks that person ‘should’ die, and he will use that person’s fortune for the betterment of his and other people’s life.
What follows aftermath are the mental struggles of the boy, as he faces guilt, self loathing and what not. This book dives deep into human psyche and themes of conscience and morality…..and truly is considered one of the all time classics of this genre. One thing I love about this book, that the themes of human mind explored by the author have different interpretation for almost every person who reads this book. You will enjoy it !!
Original is in russian…read the Pevear/Volohosky translation for english..this one is the best.
