I’ve been branching out into audiobooks recently and I’m finding I just don’t enjoy third person narratives in that format.
What I have enjoyed so far is the books mentioned in the title. These books are presented as if they are accounts of things that actually happened.
In The war of the worlds and the island of doctor moreau the first person narrative frequently breaks the fourth wall and addresses the ‘reader’ of perhaps a fictional newspaper directly. For example in war of the worlds the narrator talks about how he is contributing to the wider debate about the events.
The handmaid’s tale is presented as an account that was smuggled out of the state in the book. And that account is then being discussed at a seminar.
I’m having a hard time putting into words what I’m looking for but simply I’m looking for more first person fiction with unreliable narrators that break the fourth wall by presenting as real world accounts or narrations.
Any help is much appreciated.
