Hey everyone! I just recently re-read How to American after 3 years since my initial read and god, I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a book as much as I did this one.
How to American chronicles Jimmy’s life as an immigrant in America and is packed full of hilarious accounts and anecdotes from all parts of his life. I absolutely loved the witty, self-depricating humor present throughout, but it wasn’t just all about the comedy as Jimmy also deftly weaves in memories from his trying times, delving into themes of self-doubt, the desperate desire to fit in, and his uphill battle to realize his passion.
I don’t think I’ve ended a book feeling more motivated, optimistic and charged-up to conquer my own goals than I did with How to American! The fact that Jimmy doesn’t try to victimize himself or play-up his struggles despite it being an autobiography is also super refreshing.
I’ll love to read more books like it, biographies about people overcoming impossible odds to achieve their dreams, with an overall tone that is equal parts light-hearted and sombre as needed. I’m open to books by personalities from any fields, tho I’d definitely prefer ones from creative sectors as I’m involved in one as well.
