Recently I was watching a Chinese romcom TV show (think K-drama but made in China) that takes place in the late 1930s – early 1940s during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The show follows a group of cadets in an army academy as war tensions begin to ramp up. The portrayal of the Chinese culture and mindset in the show is very incongruous with what I’ve seen in other dramas set in modern China. While I know the show is historical fiction and taking a lot of liberties, it does make me want to learn more about the Chinese people during this time period and how the Second Sino-Japanese War influenced the development of modern Chinese culture. What is a good, **unbiased** book about this time period that focuses on the cultural evolution of the Chinese people vs the war itself?
