Usually I’m a fan of fantasy, and I still am. Rarely will I delve into books that are “slice of life”, or based on real life.
But, I’d like to venture out. And I’ll be having some down time on vacation soon, so I’d like to try out a new genre, being suspenseful thriller. I wanna be on the edge of my seat, enjoy the interactions between characters, and I love a good plot twist as well if it’s in there. No romance needed.
Bonus points for an abundance of female or minority protagionists/characters.
I love good plots and strong friendships as well in the background. I’d like to make a good choice for a blind buy!

Its about a girl who got abducted and was kept captive in a cellar for months. It’s been a long time since I read the book but I remembered it being good enough for me.
Elle Cosimano’s Finlay Donovan series is very entertaining.
Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.
When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer, and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet . . . Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.
Fast-paced, deliciously witty, and wholeheartedly authentic in depicting the frustrations and triumphs of motherhood in all its messiness, hilarity, and heartfelt moments, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is the first in a brilliant new series from YA Edgar Award nominee Elle Cosimano.
[Age of Vice](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/60177466) did it for me. Have fun!
I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makkai
Master Class by Christina Dalcher reads a bit like a Black Mirror episode.
Sundial by Catriona Ward delves a bit into the psychological horror genre but it is incredibly fast paced and will definitely have you on the edge of your seat
Depending on just how far out you’re willing to venture, I highly suggest Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits by Jason Pargin. It’s a sci-fi dystopian thriller/comedy and it is so much fun.
All of these have female protagonists and little to no romance
I’ve recently gotten into thrillers, and I really liked Behind Closed Doors by BA Paris, although it veered more into horror at times, along with The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden, and some of her other books. Crazy fun twists and even though silly at times, I still gobble up her work. I also liked Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubika.
Just finished Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera on my vacation and loved it! Quick read but equal parts witty and suspenseful. Ended up being the perfect beach read for me!
I like the Lucas Davenport series by John Sandford. The first ones is {{Rules of Prey by John Sandford}}.
Maybe a book by John Grisham, David Baldacci, Daniel Silva or Tom Clancy
Salvation of a Saint by Keigo Higashino
