Right now I’m working with that age range and sadly a lot of them haven’t moved to big chapter books for personal reading. I think a lot of adults romanticize what kids are reading and will say The Wind in the Willows or something from their own era but the reality of it in an American public elementary school (especially post-Covid) is different.
Now the teachers will read aloud things like: a lot of Roald Dahl, Charlotte’s Web, Wonder, Harry Potter, The One and Only Ivan
But the kids on their own will check out
Owl Diaries
Pete the Cat
Fly Guy
Dr Seuss
Non-fiction about dinosaurs, pets/animals, crystals/minerals, sports
Graphic novels like:
Wings of Fire
Big Nate
I Survived
The Baby-Sitters Club
