    The title!

I am reading samples from Peavear and Volokhonsky, and Burgin, comparing them to the original writing in Russian, and leaning more towards P&V

The reason I am asking Slavic people specifically is because I speak multiple languages, including Macedonian (native) and know that there are linguistic nuances that matter to the story but are often lost to certain translations. For a similar reason I don’t watch dubbed movies but rather prefer subtitles, because stories are told with voice and tone too, and also sometimes certain idioms make sense only in the original language.

I see a lot of native English speakers disliking certain translations and calling them “stiff” which makes me wonder if they are in fact truer to the original text, because I can see how Russian and Slavic languages and speaking can be perceived as stiff.

And while we’re at it, if you have favorite translations of other Russian books, please share them.
