Well, when I was 18, I read this book. I’ve still been reading a lot, but I’ve never enjoyed a book so much.
Any recommendations for books I might like?
Has the same thing happened to anyone with this or another book? Any advice for enjoy more the books?
Recently I read “The gambler” by Dostoyevski too, and it is pretty good too. But nothing like Crime and Punishment.
Thank you!

Russians are in my opinion, at least classically, the best novelists. And you read probably the best one. If you’d like to stick to Dostoevesky then I’d encourage you to try Brothers Karamazov. However, Russian literature doesn’t end there. Tolstoy is great, I’d say start with The Death of Ivan Illyich to see if you like him too. My favorite Russian novel is one called the Master and Margarita, written by Mikali Bulgakov. The talking, charismatic cat is my favorite character.
I’d also say Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol is a great story about Russian fraud. If you like things that are more dark, checkout Lolita by Nabakov.
I felt the same way and bounced between Dostoevsky and Tolstoy for a period, but they aren’t exactly similar, having their own particular ‘brands’ of greatness. Some writers who gave me the Dostoevsky feeling were Machado de Assis, Knut Hamsun, and most of all and oddly enough Proust. Proust is almost a beautiful pleasant yin to Dostoevsky’s neurotic messy yang, and Proust is also heavily influenced by Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, so it makes sense. Never have I read a better writer in regards to romance, and I am not one to seek out romance. He has the grit and depth that you want, but he doesn’t write about lunatics and murder.
