I used to be a massive reader but I got out of the habit of it, I was thinking I would get back into it though a good mystery novel, not a genre I’ve read a lot of but I enjoy the mystery genre in other media (not the ‘crime’ genre as such. As that brings up the idea of grizzled police officers catching criminals which definitely isn’t for me, for example I’ve read Kate Atkinson and I hated it).
My dream mystery novel is something like the Knives Out films but in novel form, they are the last mystery content I truly loved and I’m hoping for something witty and twisty and lighthearted like that, I just miss sinking into a gripping good novel, and hope something like what I’m asking for would be an easier read for me to get me started again or maybe be a good idea for something to take on holiday with me.
I’m not opposed to the book having political messages (like Knives Out does!), I’m not opposed to old novels/classics (Brighton Rock I’d argue is a crime novel but I LOVED that!) but something modern is preferred, similarly something shorter is preferred but if a longer book hits all my wants then don’t hesitate to suggest it! Comedy is a bonus, romance or romantic themes are a negative but not a dealbreaker. another thing is I’m really not keen on ‘booktok’ books but I’ve never actually read one for myself so that may be prejudice? I’m a 20 year old british man if that helps with suggestions? thank you!

Knives out is based on Agatha Christie’s style of murder mystery so you should probably try those books. They aren’t modern but are mostly short, light reads with some humour and there are plenty to choose from
I think Stuart Turton’s novels might fit the bill.
I know you’re after something more modern, but Agatha Christie’s novels are classics for a reason, and definitely still enjoyable for a modern audience.
Also maybe check out The Guest List by Lucy Foley, or The Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.
