I’m watching ShoGun and it made me curious about this book. For those who have read it – do you think the author did a good job of respecting and reflecting the inner world of these women? I have always been skeptical of this book because it was written by someone so far removed from the person he’s writing about.
Before I get a bunch of people telling me writers can write whatever they want, let’s all put our sharpened pens down. I realize we can all stretch our imaginations and write about people outside our own gender/culture/time. I ask because the life of a Geisha is so specific and Japanese culture is so unique and particular, and he made the choice to write in first person. I want to hear from people who have 1. Read the book and 2. May want to suggest something better/different.
Thank you!
