Perhaps it’s genre fatigue, but it feels like a lot of the newer mystery/thrillers have minimal roadblocks for the main protagonist. E.G., I’m reading a book where the main character is a private investigator looking for a missing man. This man has been missing for 3 years without any progress by the local law enforcement. However, the PI instantly identifies something that was missed for 3 years which begins the journey of finding the man. Step-by-step, the PI, continues to make progress until she ultimately finds the man.
This is just one example, and I understand authors have to consider pacing, but has anyone else been struggling with writing like this within the genre?

I think the entire concept of mystery books is strange. Every book is a mystery until you finish reading it, because you don’t know how it ends. Making a mystery book means that the entire point of the book is to finish the book. It’s a very odd caricature of itself. While I am sure that some authors do this well, I struggle conceptually with the idea of mystery novels.
