I typically read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi — I consider these easy to read because of the world building or fast paced plot. I want to read more books that are more philosophical or character driven, or more like art where I can just enjoy how beautifully / geniusly written they are — this is what I assume literary fiction is.

However, not being much of an intellectual, I tend to feel intimidated either by the length or by synopses that seem very simple and don’t give much away. I just feel that there are so many best sellers, classics and award winning books that everyone else is reading that I’m missing out on just because they don’t perfectly fit into my typical genres, so I’d appreciate any help!

No idea if these are literary fiction or not but here are some books that I absolutely love, that are unlike what I normally read:
    – White tiger
    – The beach
    – Never let me go
    – Brave new world
    – Steppenwolf
    – Call of the wild

Others I’ve tried but failed to get into:
    – Kafka on the shore (easy to read, enjoyed the magical realism, but in the end, I felt that all the symbolism and themes just flew over my head)
    – Midnight Children (DNF, beautifully written but beyond my current level of attention)

Hope you can kind of tell what I’m looking for from just that, thanks so much in advance!
