Looking for a detective novel that feels like the inspiration for Detective Miller from Leviathan Wakes

I loved every book in the Expanse series, but nothing came close to that first book for me. Especially the parts about Miller. An old jaded detective, past his prime. Old school guy whose got the street smarts & good cop work, solves crimes, but starting to think “whats the point?”.

I know it sounds like a trope, I’m wondering where it came from. Are there any old classic novels like this that inspired Miller?
