Just finished Prophet Song last night and wanted to hear some other people’s thoughts.
I was excited to read this one, but it was a disappointment. The stylistic choice with the lack of paragraphs and quotations made it hard to read. It felt like a gimmick. It reminded me of something I saw in elementary school where we learned about a poem about a grasshopper where the text was formatted to be in the shape of a grasshopper. I understand what Lynch was trying to do, but for me it didn’t work.
I probably could’ve gotten past that, but these characters just felt flat. I found myself not really caring if a bomb dropped on Eilish or not.
With the rise of far right and fascist ideology in the West as well as ongoing refugee crises it is certainly a timely work. However, I don’t feel like it added much to the dystopian genre beyond that. In the end that wasn’t enough for me to see past the shortcomings.
