I have been trying to get my mom to read more by recommending her books, but I’m beginning to run out of ideas since it’s been pretty hit and miss with suggestions. She was a film student and watches way too many movies, so I’m trying to push her out of her “media comfort zone”.

Recently, I’ve been giving her books from my Kurt Vonnegut collection, of which she loved Mother Night, enjoyed God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, and couldn’t finish Cat’s Cradle. She also has nothing against reading graphic novels, and really loved both Maus and Persepolis (preferred Persepolis though).

She’s also always been a fan of Greek Mythology (don’t recommend Circe though, I’ve already tried and she didn’t like it), HP Lovecraft stories, and Alfred Hitchcock & Akira Kurosawa films. She has also told me that she’s fine with reading classic literature (she likes Borges and Lorca), but her first language isn’t English and has a hard time reading super complicated prose like Oscar Wilde. Actually, if anyone has some Spanish or Italian literature to recommend, that would be nice too.

I’ve also never asked her this, but I don’t think she’s a big fan of sci-fi. I think my dad (also a fellow film nerd) has made her watch Blade Runner too many times.
