Hello, good people: I teach college freshmen at one of the CUNY schools in NYC: urban youth, fresh out of HS, reluctant readers and not overly eager to participate in class discussions. I need a short NON fiction title (ideally under 250 pp) that will be able to interest and hold the attention span of a disparate group of 25-30 students. Ideally, something about issues they can all relate to: sexuality, immigration, urban politics, current events, etc. So unfortunately works like Camus’s The Myth of Sisyphus are out: it simply won’t “speak” to them (sad but true). Any suggestions will be much appreciated: including memoirs!! A friend has already recommended Zadie Smith’s “Intimations,” so I might start with that, seeing as it’s so very short. A huge thank you in advance!!
