Trying to remember a book

I read this book around 1997. For the longest time, I thought it was Stephen King. It is a family that belongs to the circus or a carnival. The teen son is the main character. They all work at night and they go in detail as to what they do to keep the house dark. The boy finds out that the clown in the circus is actually his dad.

Does anyone know what I’m talking about???
