hello! 🙂
hi! looking for suggestions in any genre that may fit what i need. tl;dr getting back into reading physical books after being unable to for years.
for starters, i have an english degree and i am so in love with the classics. post-brain injury my vision really suffered. 3 years later and i can read physical books normally again, but im struggling sometimes. the other issue i have is my attention span is a lot worse. i can sort of get around this by annotating like crazy but sometimes i just want to read a book and not annotate it. also i usually have an audiobook going too, and manga/graphic novels if my eyes hurt.
i’ve been going back to my favorites (sirens of titan by kurt vonnegut, wind/pinball by murakami) and didn’t struggle with those too badly. i just finished the first novel for bakemonogatari.
to get a sense of what literature i generally gravitate to —
my favorite audiobooks from the last 3 years (post injury) include steinbeck’s “grapes of wrath,” dazai’s “no longer human” & “the setting sun”, murakami’s “wind up bird chronicle,” toni morrison’s books “sula,” “beloved”, “jazz” & “tar baby,” homer’s “the odyssey” (maybe better as an audiobook bcs of its oral beginnings), aeschylus’ “the oresteia,” vonnegut’s “cats cradle,” “mother night” “welcome to the monkey house” & “armageddon in retrospect,” min jin lee’s “pachinko,” yukio mishima’s “the temple of the golden pavilion,” vuong’s “on earth we’re briefly gorgeous,” marquez’s “one hundred years of solitude,” gaiman’s “american gods,” burroughs’ “junky” — i could go on.
thank you! 🙂
