I’m not religious (I’m only saying that because nearly every review I’ve read seems to be from religious types), but I find their perspective to be fascinating if not a little dark. And I realized halfway through that many other books I’ve read are exactly what these people criticize, our story about them as opposed to their story as they experience it. I’m just looking for more stories told first hand, or translated first hand accounts of people actually living in these groups.

    1. I’ve also read “Don’t sleep there are snakes” which was good but lost me when it started focusing more heavily on the language and grammar as opposed to telling stories about their daily life. But I’d recommend it just for the first half even if you aren’t into linguistics.

This is more tribal but Malidoma Some “Of Water and the Spirit”. Its his story of being taken from his village in Burkina Faso and sent to a Jesuit school at a young age, and his journey back to his culture and village. A great read.
