I’m not trying to cause trouble but I found a copy of *The Wind in the Willows* at a secondhand store the other day. I picked it up because I’ve heard so many people say how great it is and I’d never read it before. I really don’t get why it’s a classic. It’s moderately cute but a classic?
What classic or popular book has left you feeling underwhelmed?

Three men in a boat…it had its moment but I didn’t understand certain things
In the heat of the night…the ending personally irked me because the most obvious suspect wasn’t the bad guy but turned out to be the least expected one with the worst reason
Frankenstein. BEAUTIFUL writing but otherwise very boring 😩😩😩
Gatsby. I must try again one day!!
I have three: Wuthering Heights, The Great Gatsby and The Bell Jar. Of the three, I liked Wuthering best, yet I felt as if its structure was a bit chaotic, plus the story wasn’t for me, but it’s a perfect novel for beginner readers so I still recommend it. The Great Gatsby I really disliked because it’s certainly not as great as it’s said to be (pun intended). Apart from a few brilliant passages, the story is underdeveloped, the characters aren’t interesting and the twists are extremely predictable. The Bell Jar i’m still a little conflicted about. Its racist parts deeply bothered me, as it was written during a time where The Civil Rights Movement was as active as ever. However, I’m well aware of Plath’s history with mental illness, so I’ll probably give it another try. It’s just my personal opinion, of course. Oh, and 1984, Winston and Julia are the worst written characters I’ve ever encountered, but I loved the social commentary.
A Confederacy of Dunces. Ugh.
