For a single novel about an ancient warrior returning to battle, I’d read Legend by David Gemmell.
There are other novels in the series, but they feature different characters.

The Wheel of Time, mc is a reincarnated wizard who is a bit insane. The world/culture building is divine. This is long as in 13 thick books. But it means going down avenues exploring side characters and different story arcs a lot of series don’t have time for.
