I’m looking for a book that gives a decent history of the national security apparatus and the threats it poses. From WWII to circa the present.

I’ve seen some books that focus just on WWII and Truman, Vietnam, a shift around 9/11, or other events.

I’m looking for something more comprehensive that discusses the history of the national security state and the threat it poses towards America, be that its foreign meddlings, war lust, domestic spying, inappropriate influence on policy, inappropriate partisan influence, blackmail, propaganda campaigns, all of it.

I have OCD and reading a physical book isn’t an option. I’m looking for an audiobook. But if u have a rly good suggestion that doesn’t have an audiobook form, I’d still like to know.

There has to be a good book out there on this topic. I know there’s plenty on specific incidents, as mentioned above.

This isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, but it is a niche under that national security umbrella. *Restricted Data: The History of Nuclear Secrecy in the United States* by Alex Wellerstein touches on some national security issues you’re wanting. This includes the spying, influence on policy, propoganda, etc., and I think he goes up to Obama’s presidency, but I could be misremembering.
