Can you recommend a book that teaches me how to avoid being cheated, deceived, or scammed?
I’m looking for a book that makes me a little less naïve or gullible. Something that will help me spot scams and avoid getting tricked. Are there any good books on protecting yourself from fraud and deception?
I’ve been meaning to read the book ‘How to Cheat at Everything’, but it’s sheer size is rather intimidating. Reading how to scam people will help you just as much as reading about how not to be taken advantage of. If you are a young woman, I would recommend reading ‘The Game’ by Strauss. A reporter joins the pick-up artists underground network and learns their tricks. However, by the time scams are in print, they are already dated. You may want to keep up to date with information on-line.

The best protection is knowing how these things work. I’m afraid I don’t have a specific recommendation, but you’re looking for books that show the function of the scam.
Scams and cults work by taking advantage of similar glitches in our brains. With scams the usual process is hooking a person by offering something they want, then creating some kind of pressure so the scamee feels they have to “act quickly” to get that thing they want. Time pressure reduces our ability to think logically. The other most common scam route is to get in via something the scamee doesn’t know much about. Think tech scams on grandparents and NFTs in general.
