I’m on my 3rd read now. And I just can’t think of a more reprehensible character than Elmira. Selfish, idiotic, petty, cold brutal and heartless… Blue Duck is a more likable character! Then July, soft, weak willed, narrow minded, indecisive, stubborn and careless to the point it endangers those around him… and putting those two together… it’s so frustrating… then I always come to realize that they are opposite sides of the same coin. And without that narrative thread Lonesome Dove would lose much of its magic. That tragic one sided romance (for both of them) pitched up against the backdrop of strong characters like Gus, Call, deets, newt, Lorrie, even that chick who was willing to bang and marry Roscoe… makes the contrast all the more stark and devastating. On my first read I just hated those two… on my second I realized I hated those two because I actually shared traits with them both.. then on my third and current read, I realize it’s just damn good honest writing. This book has everything…or put another way, a little of something for everyone.

Larry McMurtry wrote a lot of impulsive, stupid characters. I think he got a kick out of them. Billy the Kid in Anything for Billy was like that.
