    Hi all!

Context below, but TLDR: there is a young girl (7th grade) with some clear self esteem issues (kids calling her fat) and a past of her father leaving. Any appropriate book recommendations that a teacher can give her to possibly help her during this difficult time? a fiction book is preferred.

    Context:

My mom is a teacher and there is a 7th grade girl who seems very desperate for attention, and who talks to my mom (and anyone else that will listen) A LOT about how she gets called fat and about how she will never find a man / she needs a man to be happy. The girl’s dad left her & her mom, which made the mom spin out of control. Hence: this girl thinks that she needs a man to ever be happy, but she doesn’t think that will ever happen because she gets told she is fat.

Obviously my mom wants to help beyond the “you should love yourself!” responses she gives in the lunch room. The girl isn’t one of her students so it’s not like she can pull her back after class or anything.

She can tell a guidance counselor of course – and she will – but my mom wants to do something to ensure that the girl knows she is being listened to and that she is being heard..not just being pawned off onto a guidance counselor.

I feel like a cheesy self help book wouldn’t be the best way to go…might be a bit too obvious. Besides- what 7th grader who is dealing with bullies wants to be seen carrying around a self help book given to them by a teacher in the lunch room?

Does anyone know a good, appropriate book to give a student to encourage female self confidence and reliance?
