I’m looking for books set in America in its early days, something about the Wild West or something set in a small town/mining village of some sorts. I liked how Blake Crouch painted the picture of the town called Abandon in the book with the same name (example of what I’m looking for).

Allow me to be the first to recommend *Lonesome Dove* (Larry McMurtry), which is sort of a last-days-of-the-Wild-West-so-now-the-Texas-Rangers-are-herding-cattle kind of book. It’s very long, but it has great character development and some truly heartbreaking scenes.
I haven’t read this yet but I’m looking forward to Victor LaValle’s “Lone Women,” which seems like it would fit what you’re looking for.
