I remember reading Stephen King’s Danse Macabre some years ago and being fascinated by it. For those who don’t know: It’s a non-fiction book in which the influence of societal fears and anxieties on the horror genre (mostly movies but also books, comics etc) is analyzed, as well as the psychology of what makes the content scary. Now society obviously has changed since it’s publication in 1981 and I’m wondering if there’s a more recent book that does something like that. Bonus points if gender/sexuality is a theme (though that might be a given). I’m happy about any suggestions!

    1. I think _Men, Women, and Chainsaws_ by Carol J. Clover might be just what you’re looking for.
