Hi everyone!
I searched this sub for well written books or books with good prose, but I think that it can be a very subjective thing.
So it’s better if I’ll just describe what I dislike in books, and maybe you’ll be able to recommend me authors that don’t do those things.
What I dislike:
– info dumps, omnipresent in fantasy and sci-fi, but they can happen in every genre
– overly poetic prose (is it called “purple prose”?)
– flashbacks. Don’t get me wrong, flashbacks are ok sometimes, but I remember dropping a book after a double flashback in the first chapter (a flashback inside a flashback)
– a lot of exposition in general
– I’m also not very fond of romance, fantasy or detective books
Examples of authors whose writing style I like: Brandon Sanderson, Cormac McCarthy, Kurt Vonnegut, Rowling. The problems I have with them:
– I don’t love fantasy, so it’s difficult for me to enjoy reading Sanderson
– I loved “the road”, but now I’m reading “blood meridian” and I feel so far away from the characters. They spend their time doing massacres and I never know what they feel. There’s no real POV, which doesn’t help. It’s like the Silmarillion in a way, a description of events happening in chronological order
– I love how Vonnegut writes. There is always a lot of exposition, but he does it in such an ironic way that it never feels boring. At the same time, I rarely care about the characters. They are interesting, but they could die and I wouldn’t care. Because of this, I rarely care about what happens as well. I just really like his writing style
– I don’t think that JK Rowling is this incredible writer, but her writing never turns me off, and she’s very famous, so I thought it would be a good example
That’s it. I don’t know if it would be easy to recommend me authors knowing all this, let’s just try it and see how it goes.
Thanks to whoever will help!
