Looking for historical fiction or mystery set in the 1920s or 1930s, particularly featuring Black or Asian characters (although that’s not a requirement). I’m hoping for books that capture everyday life in those times, rather than the escapades of the elite…while Gatsby is a wonderful book, it’s not what I’m looking for.
I’m currently wrapping up a mystery series set in rural Alabama during the Great Depression, The Darling Dahlias by Susan Wittig Albert. She’s a wonderful writer who really gives a sense of time and place, and I’d like to read more about the era, hopefully from more diverse perspectives. Hoping for books that explore life in immigrant communities or POC’s experiences. I’ve also recently read Rust in the Root, which is an alt history/fantasy novel set in the 1930s, and Gods of Jade and Shadow which is set in 1920s Mexico.
Thanks for any recommendations!
