Hi! What historical fiction/adventure books would you recommend for a 12 year old boy? He’s very mature for his age with a great understanding of history and politics so he would prefer a book that’s not specifically aimed at children but still age appropriate.

He might like The Birchbark House books by Louise Erdrich? They’re a kind of indigenous response to the Little House books. The central family keeps moving west and there’s a lot of focus on day-to-day living. (The first chapter describes a village decimated by plague and there is a child death from plague later in the first book.)
The Righteous Revenge of Artemis Bonner, by Walter Dean Myers
The Pox Party, M.T. Anderson
In Darkness, Nick Lake
Audacity, Melanie Crowder
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Avi
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry series, by Mildred D. Taylor
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell, Susanna Clarke
Catherine, Called Birdy, by Karen Cushman
Letters From Rifka, Karen Hesse
Empty Places, Kathy Cannon Wiechman
Day of Tears, Lester Julius
Indian No More, Charlene Willing McManis
Chains, Laurie Halse Andersen
When the Angels Left the Old Country, Sacha Lamb
Elizabeth Wein’s books might suit him, they’re the kind of books that are equally suitable for teens and adults.
Mister Robert by Josuah Logan
