So I want to read more outside my fantasy literature but I can never find books that the description makes me go “Oh that’s interesting” so I never end up starting anything besides the stuff I already know I like.
So I would like some suggestions (maybe 3-5 but any number works) for books that you think would determine if a person would really like a genre or if it’s just not their cup of tea!
For example I like fantasy so I’d suggest Lord of the Rings, The wheel of Time, and disc world. Each give a good example of different kinds of fantasy. LoTR is classic high fantasy, WoT is a bit more grounded and dark but not grimdank, and Discworld is light fun and the books aren’t 800 pages long. This gives someone looking at getting into fantasy a taste of the different kinds, so they can choose after.
So what are your favorite genres and the books your suggest to help others get into it?

sci fi:
Rendezvous with Rama (classic, harder sci fi)
Project Hail Mary (modern harder sci fi)
Stranger in a Strange Land (classic weird sci fi)
Dune (Modernish weird sci fi)
Space Opera (silly, fun sci fi)
Gateway (dark Sci fi)
I know that’s six, I’ll risk the wrath of the judges.
