Forgive me as am not well read as all of you but a little background. I was really into reading when i was younger, and then around 13 years old something happenned to me and i grew distracted (hmm what could it be?) and seemingly fell out of my reading habits. I remember liking most of the books they made us read in school so this year i decided to get back into it as i had a massive desire to break the phone doom scrolling habit. First book i read was Dune, which was difficult first read to get back into it but i really enjoyed it. THen i read Dark Matter and REALLY liked the fast pace and thrill ride. Then i start reading “reviews” on this book and couldnt get passed all the reviews that said it was “immature”, written by a “high schooler”, and that it was the literary part of it was too easy? I came back into books to enjoy another art medium (like music and movies) but getting discouraged by the disucssions. I don’t ever hear people discuss a certain song’s “compression” or “string arrangement” complexity, for me i feel like i enjoy music, movies, books all the same, did i like it or not? Why do people get so stuck on the literary part of books instead of the content? Make it make sense for this himbo. Sorry for ranting.

Enjoying art is and always will be subjective. Just read/watch what you want, it’s really not that deep.
Saying this as someone whose major is English Language and Literature, I’ve observed how even the works that most people enjoy are deficient in some ways, even the classics. Every work has it’s significance, and you enjoying art is enough of a reason for it to be deemed worthy.
You’ll find that people can be overly critical of a book if they disliked the style, sometimes I read teen books that I think are immature but other times I read some I love.
I don’t think it’s that it’s not literary or anything they just didn’t like how it was written and instead of being constructive they get angry and mean.
I don’t get it myself. I read many genres in the end I enjoy literary stuff just a much as kids books. But I’m fussy too lol
