My grandfather is struggling with deep depression after losing his wife and I’ve been trying to help him any way I can. He’s had a life long love of murder mysteries and has nearly cleared all the books in his library (it’s a small town), so he’s covered all the classics.

He very emphatically doesn’t like anything that falls into the “thriller” category, and isn’t interested in any paranormal/fantasy stuff. I inherited his love of books and also inhale them at an alarming rate, but I almost exclusively read fantasy at this point in my life. I’ve enjoyed some Susan Hill books, but otherwise I’m useless.

So I’m hoping someone with a love of the murder mystery genre might have some suggestions. Maybe obscure or new books that might not be in every library?

Older classics: Dorothy L. Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, Josephine Tey, and Agatha Christie.

Also, check out the TV show Foyles War. It’s about a Detective Chief Inspector solving mysteries in World War II Hastings.

Has he read the Inspector Morse series by Colin Dexter, The Shetland books by Ann Cleeves or the Cadfael books by Ellis Peters?
