A few weeks back I decided to give ol’ PGW a try, never having read any of his work before. I started with the Jeeves Omnibus vol.1 (which seemed as reasonable a place to start as any) and was quite enjoying the flow and humour of *Thank You Jeeves* until the first mention of the N word. I dismissed it and carried on regardless, putting it down to the language of the time, but I’ve now reached a part of the story where Jeeves appears to be preparing to get Bertie ‘blacked up’ with burnt cork in order to facilitate his escape from a yacht by mingling with the, ahem, ‘minstrels’
My question is, is this an isolated instance in the series or can I expect to come across more of this crass and archaic rubbish? I’m not sure I’m too interested in carrying on if it’s a common motif..
