I have this recurring joke with my brother that most great novels are just novels about people being sad and miserable. Like you can’t be a great writter unless you write dramas.

I’m already in my thirties and I like well written books but I fucking hate drama, life is sad enough I won’t actively pursuit sadness in my leisure time.

So I tend to gravitate toward fantasy and historical fiction because the mood is usually lighter but I still enjoy good prose. My favorite book ever is ‘A hundred years of solitude’ because it’s so wonderfully written that I can forgive it actually is kida sad tbf.

Can you recommend me great books with great prose that won’t fill me with melancholy and reflection about the absolute misery of human nature?
