Inspired by someone else’s post about how to support your local bookstore, I thought I’d share this bit of news. [Bookshop.org](https://Bookshop.org) already lets you order print books from your local bookstore, but soon you’ll be able to support your favorite indie by buying e-books from them as well.

Reasons for readers to shop there instead of Amazon:

\-Indie bookstores do more to promote authors, including holding special events where readers can come and meet them.

\-The selectors at indie bookstores are knowledgeable about their areas, and can not only help you find the right book for you, but also can help drives sales of authors other than the big blockbuster names that Amazon pushes.

\-Competition is healthy in any field. If Amazon wipes out indie booksellers, where could readers find books that Amazon refuses to carry?

\-Having spoken to publishing insiders and librarians, I can confirm that Amazon’s domination of the marketplace is affecting the books that the major publishers are willing to publish. They’re becoming less and less willing to take risks on new and unknown authors, preferring to stick with the safe bet of proven big names. That leads to a smaller, less varied pool of titles for readers to choose from. It also means that Amazon has more control over pricing, which shrinks profit margins for publishers, which further exacerbates their fear of taking risks on new books.
